Access to adequate health care is complicated by a lack of hospital resources, distances that villagers must travel, and the day long queues that are typical of district hospital outpatient clinics. There are small “private” clinics of variable quality scattered throughout the rural towns and markets, but they require payment.
From the beginning of MCV, a small clinic serving orphans and their guardians has been operated by MCV. It is staffed by an experience full time, degreed clinical nurse. In addition to the orphans and guardians, the clinic also provided health care to the almost four hundred secondary students who attend Gracious Secondary School on the MCV Campus.
Typical clinical problems encountered at the clinic include Malaria, worm and fungal infections, various skin infections, asthma, and a variety of self limiting respiratory complaints. It also serves as a triage station determining which patients should be transported to the hospital.
