Together! ACT Now Malawi Initiative

Started in 2008, Together! ACT Now‘s Malawi Initiative uses theatre to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS in the villages surrounding MCV.

Together! ACT Now has a very basic method of getting the message across. After reading an International Development Research Centre study about HIV/AIDS which states “Drama and theatre are probably among the most effective and appropriate vehicles for giving HIV/AIDS prevention messages to rural and poor urban communities in Africa which have limited access to modern media,” the main idea for the program was born.

The program is centered around theatre and includes two staged performances, one short comedy and one full-length drama, many speeches, poems, and songs about HIV/AIDS. After the shows audience members from the village participate in discussion groups, encouraging them to think actively and take ownership of the awareness effort. There is also an on-site HIV tester available after performances so that villagers have the chance to receive free testing and counseling.

Together! ACT Now‘s Malawi Initiative has generated immediate success. In 2009 alone the project distributed over 10,000 condoms, directly reached 5,000+ people, and tested over 350 people for HIV.  Started by Kyle Horne, Together! ACT Now is an independent organization working in partnership with MCV.  For more information please visit their website togetheractnow.org
